As the world’s leader in fresh cartilage tissue used for joint repair and skin allografts to heal severe burns, AlloSource has grown into one of the largest tissue networks in the country. They are the world’s largest processor of cellular bone allografts and deliver unparalleled expertise and customer service to a growing network of surgeons, partners and the country’s most reputable Organ Procurement Organizations. As one of the leading innovators in maximizing tissue donation with the goal of offering optimal solutions for healthcare providers and their patients, AlloSource is recognized by the medical community for its ability to process and provide high quality tissue.
In addition to serving as Gift of Hope’s chief executive, Mr. Cmunt currently provides industry leadership as President of the American Association of Tissue Banks. -Aside from the obvious weight gain and heart disease issues, why should we try to eliminate sugar from our diets and how does your 14 day program help?
Not all carbs and sugars are metabolized the same way in the body. Excess sugar consumption causes insulin resistance which causes inflammation in your body. When advising clients, I recommend reducing all refined sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), from their diet. Try stevia, rapadura, sucanat, maple syrup, organic local honey, molasses, and dates, all of which contain more nutrients and are less processed.
Fructose metabolism within the liver has been shown to generate harmful compounds and may cause free radical damage, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and hypertension. Products that contain HFCS are sodas, breakfast cereals, fruit juice blends, fruit flavored yogurts, salad dressings, breads-even the whole wheat options, candy, nutrition energy bars, meal supplements and agave nectar. Aim for less than 25 grams of HFCS per day to avoid risks for diabetes and obesity.
The fructose in fruit has fiber and does not always correlate to a high glycemic load. Glycemic load defines the quality of the carbohydrate and has a stronger correlation in people with heart disease and diabetes. Berries have the lowest amount of sugar and fructose and the highest amount of phytonutrients. I recommend obtaining sugar from natural sources such as fruit because you have the added benefit of fiber to slow absorption.
FYI.. Sugar comes in many varieties and is processed in a variety of ways. From an environmental standpoint, the majority of sugarcane is not organically grown, and many sugar plantations use insecticides, pesticides and crop burning as standard practices which can negatively impact soil, air, water, and the health of the workers.
-How can an elimination diet or the 14 Day Transformation change how we eat for life?
Often people are unaware if they have a food sensitivity which is very different from a food allergy. Full blown Allergies cause immediate symptoms and are very different. The most common food allergies in people are eggs, wheat, peanuts, soy, milk shellfish and fish.
We often crave the foods we are most sensitive to! The only way to truly know this is by eliminating these potential toxic food triggers which often show up as mental fogginess, bloating, poor quality sleep, skin breakouts, low mood, and an inability to lose weight. During the 14 Day Transformation, we will experiment by eliminating the most COMMON toxic food triggers such as gluten, dairy, wheat, sugar, grains, coffee and alcohol and sometimes eggs and soy depending on the person. We eliminate these foods for 2 weeks and then re-introduce in a methodical way and check for symptoms. The 14 Day Transformation is about creating new habits, making yourself a priority and nourishing your body with the best quality foods, self-care and YOU time. It’s also a great way to learn about yourself as an eater. Once you give up sugar for about a week, people feel a lot less inflammation, they wake up alive and feeling alert each morning and they lose weight!
– Is it true that sugar can lead to classic signs of addiction because of the powerful effects on the brain’s reward system?
Sugar, is a drug, along with caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. It’s not easy to break! These drugs boost our energy, mood and sometimes calm us but then we crash hard and crave even more!
Eliminate refined processed sugar and your cravings will go away. Combine protein and quality fats with lots of phytonutrient rich vegetables and some fruit to balance blood sugar. Also, add in ½ your body weight in ounces of water each day. Breakfast should include protein and high quality fats such as my Transformation smoothie or eggs and vegetables.
