The Kansas City Chiefs got some relatively good news on Friday.
MRI results confirmed that Patrick Mahomes indeed has a dislocated right kneecap, but there is not significant enough damage to keep him out for the rest of the season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The 24-year-old quarterback and reigning league MVP will seek another opinion, but the expectation is that he will return this season after a brief absence.
Mahomes sustained the injury in the second quarter of Thursday’s game against the Denver Broncos and did not return.
X-rays showed that there was no fracture, but he underwent further testing Friday morning to make the final determination on the severity of the injury.
The injury had left some of Mahomes’ teammates shook, including tight end Travis Kelce, who said afterward, “His knee didn’t even look like a knee. It was all out of whack. I couldn’t even describe it.”
With the Chiefs leading the AFC West at 5-2 and Mahomes expected to miss at least a few games, there is some speculation on if Kansas City will seek a temporary replacement from outside the organization to keep the team afloat in his absence.
