Today we?d like to introduce you to Dr. Brian Cole.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don?t you give us some details about you and your story.
About 8 years ago, I was pondering how treating patients with sport-related injuries was a true privilege and incredibly gratifying, yet remained challenging to positively impact large numbers of patients when treating one patient at a time. This limitation was the subject of one post-game discussion in the training room with the voice of the Chicago Bulls, Steve Kashul.
We discussed how important patient education is as part of the routine care of injury and disease and that injury prevention is actually possible to teach if provided the proper venue. We agreed to collaborate and develop a unique radio show called Sports Medicine Weekly on ESPN radio in Chicago. Now in its 7th season airing on Saturday mornings from 8:00-8:30 am on AM 1000, we have successfully satisfied this mission.
We have a daily blog, content heavy website (www.sportsmedicineweekly.com), are active on Twitter (@BrianColeMD, @SMWHome) and Facebook (@gotosmw) and have an enormous following in the Midwest of those interested in everything from preventing throwing injuries in our youth to the how eat well and exercise responsibly as we age.
While we recognize that catching the show live on Saturday mornings can be challenging, listeners can tune in any time at?smwhome.net/podcast-player?where you will find our custom player, mobile apps and a variety of podcast resources including Apple, iHeartRadio,?Podcasts.com, SoundCloud, Spreaker, SticherRadio, TuneinRadio and You Tube.
Most importantly, the net proceeds support Orthopedic Research at Rush University Medical center.?Our research goals are straightforward: to generate much needed funding to advance orthopedic research at Rush, while creating awareness of important alternative treatments such as regenerative therapies using the patient?s own cells, including PRP, stem cells, adipose tissue and stem cells.
To date, fundraising has largely been used to investigate improvements and alternatives to existing technologies. Several projects are currently slated that are in need of additional funding to facilitate their completion and are delineated on the?BrianColeMD.com?website.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been smooth as so many are interested in remaining healthy and active. Discussing topics that relate to overuse injuries, parenting young athletes, sports nutrition, supplements, rehabilitation, and tissue transplantation have all been some of our listening audience?s favorites. We have strived to keep our overhead as low as possible in an effort to maximize our contribution to supporting orthopedic research. The sponsors of SMW actively engage when possible as speakers providing provocative topics for our listeners and everyone benefits from this approach.
So let?s switch gears a bit and go into the Sports Medicine Weekly and ESPN Chicago story. Tell us more about the business.
